This Day in Wrestling History - September 7th

In 1979, in the US, The Entertainment and Sports Programming Network (ESPN) made its debut and in 1999, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 rocked Athens, which ruptured a previously unknown fault, killing 143, injuring more than 500, and leaving 50,000 people homeless. Also in the real world, during the Blitz, Nazi Germany begins to rain bombs on London. September 7th 1940 was the first of 57 consecutive nights of bombing.  Whereas in the world of wrestling, September 7th has been a PPV day over the last couple of years.
2008: WWE Unforgiven 2008 PPV took place on this day last year, where the first ever set of Championship Scramble matches took place, with Matt Hardy, Triple H & Chris Jericho beating 4 other men to win gold. Chris Jericho & Shawn Michaels also fought in an unsanctioned match, at one of the high points of their award winning feud. Also on this night the then World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk was punted in the head by the injured Randy Orton, after an attack by Cody Rhodes, Manu and Ted DiBiase on Punk and Kofi Kingston, Chris Jericho later took CM Punk's place in the WHC Scramble Match and then won the title. This Match also marked the official return of Rey Mysterio and first match since No Way Out earlier in the year.
2007: During one of the revivals of Stampede Wrestling in Canada, the first show at the Bowness Sportsplex took place on this day.
1997: Ground Zero: In Your House took place on this day at Louisville Gardens in Louisville, Kentucky. This was the first three-hour In Your House pay-per-view. It included in the main event, a no contest between the Undertaker and Shawn Michaels, their next encounter was in the first ever Hell in a Cell match at Badd Blood. Also Bret Hart defeated The Patriot to retain the WWF Championship after The Patriot submitted to the sharpshooter.
